The "Tom Thomas, Jr. Memorial Award"

Posted by: Kit Donahue on 2008-06-19 15:37:12

Tom Thomas, Jr., WPGU DJ, 1974-76, died Friday, May 9, 2008 to a sudden illness called aortic dissection. Tom was a member of the "Back to the Heart" fundraising committee and served on the Illini Media Hall of Fame selection committee the past two years. He was one of the most active members of our alumni group and was the kind of person that couldn't do enough to help us.

Illini Media is honored and humbled that at the request of Tom's family, the "Back to the Heart" campaign has been named as the cause they would like memorial contributions to go to. Tom's wife Lauri said it is "what Tom would have wanted."

Illini Media, along with Tom's family and friends, have decided to establish "The Tom Thomas Memorial Award" to be given annually to a member of the WPGU-FM 107.1 staff not holding a board-appointed position. The award will go to the person who has made the greatest contribution to the quality and the betterment of the radio station.

The recipient will receive a framed certificate and their name will be on an engraved plaque which will be on permanent display in the radio station. They will also receive a cash gift distributed each year by Illini Media.

Donations in memory of Tom are tax-deductible and can be sent to:
