New Illini Football Public Address Announcer Is WPGU Alum

Illini Media alumnus and Hall of Fame member Gene Honda has been tapped as the public address announcer for Illini football home games this year.

Gene is the public address announcer for many events and venues including the Chicago White Sox, Blackhawks and for NCAA Final Four basketball games.

Gene worked at WPGU from 1975 to 1978 and is very involved and supportive of WPGU and Illini Media events.

“It was a great thrill to work the Illinois vs Western Michigan game,” Gene said after the September 4 home opener. “I couldn't believe how nervous I was before the game. I still got to enjoy the experience. It felt like my own personal Homecoming, and I think I'll feel that way for every game I get to work.”
