And here is a short "news release" about the professional contest and the conference:

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…

Well, you haven't really missed it -- yet. Barely two weeks remain until the AUGUST 1 entry deadline for the annual Capitolbeat reporting contest, which recognizes the best work in reporting about state government.

Send in your news clippings, broadcasts and Web postings ASAP.

Remember, if you want to win, you have to enter the competition.

Contest entries should have been aired or published from June 1, 2007, through July 31, 2008.

Awards are presented in four categories -- beat reporting, single report, in-depth reporting and columns/commentary/news analysis – in each of the separate divisions for print, radio, TV and online journalists.

A special honor, The John Aubuchon Freedom of Information Award, recognizes extraordinary efforts to get access to documents and meetings that are critical for public understanding of state government issues.

Participation in this reporting contest does NOT require membership in Capitolbeat, though of course you're encouraged to join. The competition is open to those who cover state government on a full time basis, a part time basis or even just once in awhile.

The contest entry form and detailed rules are available online at
http://capitolbeat.wordpress.com/2008-reporting-contest/

Contest winners will get their prizes at the Capitolbeat 2008 Conference Nov. 13-15 in Raleigh, N.C.

Good luck!
